The Dementia Services Development Centre offers a range of part time distance learning postgraduate courses in dementia studies. Our Certificate/Diploma/Masters programme has been running successfully for the past ten years and has recently been developed to offer a more streamlined, integrated and in-depth learning experience of shorter duration and therefore better value for money. We have two student intakes each semester, in February and September, allowing for seamless progression through the programme.

The programme consists of six modules:

The key objective of the programme is to develop an advanced understanding of multidisciplinary perspectives about dementia and approaches to dementia care and:

  • • to address clinical issues in dementia care and service delivery
  • • to foster improved multidisciplinary and collaborative practice
  • • to compare and contrast national and international research
  • • to identify and debate current practice developments
  • • to develop knowledge and skills of social research processes 

The modules are delivered initially through 1 day face-to-face introductory sessions held at the Dementia Centre (or alternative locations if sufficient student numbers) followed by 10 weeks of online learning. We use an interactive website, offer regular tutor support and give the opportunity for students to share their learning via a dedication discussion forum.

The online nature of the course means that we have a diverse student group from as far afield as New Zealand, Canada, Malta and Hong Kong as well as students from throughout the UK and Ireland. This results in an exciting mix of culture and professions (including nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, care managers) and leads to an enriched learning experience for all students. We ask that all our students have some experience of working with people with dementia in order to allow for reflection on practice in relation to the student's learning.
