About the Project

Dementia Care Practice Licence (DCPL) is a testing process which determines the competence of social care professionals. Dementia Care is a priority initiative in many countries and in Britain, the government and health professionals are making great strides to make it into a priority health issue.

The DCPL is designed by building on the model and success of a previous project (the Home Care Practice Licence). The test system it provides is suitable for a wide range of people who are working with people with dementia in any care setting. The materials cover a range of issues and incorporates realistic scenarios to enable the care professional to think, reflect and find solutions to very unique problems people with dementia experience. The materials are written from a point of view that encourages professionalism that is able to put the person with dementia at the forefront of their practice in a person-centred approach.

The DCPL test process provides:

  • • A learning experience of dementia and related issues
  • • An objective way of assessing knowledge and competence
  • • Indications of gaps in knowledge and further training needs
  • • Indications of gaps in the existing training programmes
  • • A Certificate issued by the University of Stirling that indicates your high level of competence to work with people with dementia
