Bathroom Solutions
Pressure sensitive plugs are designed to automatically release themselves if a bath or sink gets too full. Simple floor sensors activate an alarm when water reaches a specified level.
Kitchen Solutions
The kitchen can be a confusing environment for people with dementia. A concentration of electrical gadgets and uniform cabinets may cause problems. Make the kitchen safer by fitting heat sensors above cooker areas. Work surfaces should ideally be made from contrasting colours to units and with no patterns or flecks.
Bedroom Solutions
People with dementia may get up during the night. Fitting a passive infrared beam (PIR) on the side of the bed can send a message to a pager/call centre to alert if the person gets out of bed during the night.
Living Room Solutions
Telephones can be customised with pictures of relatives or carers to press instead of numbers to dial. Movement sensors linked to the internet can give peace of mind for relatives or carers living far away. Lack of movement during the day or significant movement at night will trigger an email or alarm. Remote controls with big buttons can be programmed to control all media equipment in the room.
This webpage provides a brief overview of some features that may assist, or help to ensure the safety of, people with dementia. It does not provide enough detail to inform decision making on the design of services for people with dementia. Reference to detailed literature or expert consultation is strongly recommended.
