This guide from our Intimate Caring Series has been revised and updated in line with current good practice in skincare of frail older people with dementia. It focuses on aspects of personal care that are part of the daily tasks of care staff, in particular how to protect the skin from exterior damage. Food and drink and how they relate to the skincare of older people are also discussed.

Filmed in a nursing home and using interviews with practitioners and people with dementia, the benefits for those involved are considered. It explains the common behaviours that often occur during the illness and explore how you best manage them. Expert advice is given by Dr David Somerfield (Consultant Psychiatrist) and Tim Dudley (Clinical Nurse Specialist) and real life experiences from carers themselves. This film visits the carers and their partners at home and shows how they manage dementia and learn to adapt to what is a dramatic change in their lifestyle.
